Summary: This is one of several stories exploring, "What if the Fifth Doctor had been the War Doctor?" The nightmarish flashbacks to the Time War are vivid and memorable. I actually came to care about the OFC and her dad, as well as the small Canadian mining town where the post-war Doctor finds himself recuperating. "Dr. John Smith" is a sympathetic and insightful portrayal of the Doctor: you believe it's him, even though there's never been an incarnation quite like this.
